A History of Schools in Steuben
There were thirteen school districts within the town served by one room schoolhouses. In 1931, the districts became centralized joining the Adirondack, Remsen, and Holland Patent school districts.
A man was preferred to teach grades one through eight in the 1800’s. There was no kindergarten. Usually, the women teacher outnumbered the men.
Besides teaching, the teacher’s duties included ordering wood and stoking the stove. In 1888, hardwood cut 18” to fit the stove cost $1.40 a cord delivered.
The school year consisted of two 18 week terms from December to March, and April to July. This allowed the children to be home when the roads were too muddy to be traveled and when haying started in

Adirondack Central School
There are 2 school buildings in Boonville. One, the lower grades is in the village on Rt 46. The other is the High School & is just outside the village on Rt 291.

Holland Patent Central School
