Supervisor's Message:

L. Daniel Carpenter, Supervisor

2009 has turned out to be another busy year.  The energy grant updates have been completed.  So far we have updated the boiler in the Town Hall which will save an estimated 30% in fuel.  We have installed on demand hot water system and all buildings have programmable thermostats.  We have insulated the Highway Garage and we will insulate 900 feet of heating pipe in the Town Hall.  The lighting in the Town Hall and offices have been updated to T/8 with a savings of 60%.  The Highway Garage has been updated to T/5 lighting for energy savings and a safer work environment.  We are going to increase the insulation over our Town Offices to meet the R value standards.  The Town Board approved a new water filtration and soften system, which has been installed and working great.  The Town Hall and Highway Garage were updated with new digital fire control panels which will not only set alarms inside but will set off an outside alarm and strobe light, it can call 911.  The Town purchased 38 acres of land that adjoins our sand pit and coverall, property which will give us many more years of sand and a pole barn for storage of equipment and room for future development.  With the grant money, insurance recoveries and existing funds we were able to do all the energy updates, repair the Highway Garage and purchase the new 2010 Snowplow truck and purchase the 38 acres and buildings with no debt required.  I look forward to finishing 2009 in very good shape and a good start to 2010.

 Thank you.  Dan Carpenter.

A note from our Town Clerk, Christina Anken

Attention Senior Hunters, consider purchasing a lifetime license before September 30, 2009.  Newly adopted legislation approved an increase in sporting license fees for this fall.  If you are 65 and older and hunt I encourage you to buy a lifetime license before September 30, or it's too late, because the Sportsman (age 65-69), small & big game, fishing will cost you an annual fee of $47 a year and then a DMP for $10 and then a turkey permit will cost you $10 this fall.  Consider this, a lifetime Senior Sportsman license is only $50 but, it must be purchased before September 30, 2009.  The deer management permit application fee is waived forever.  A turkey permit is included forever and best of all it last a lifetime.  You can also purchase a lifetime Senior licenses through the website: or the town clerk's office during hrs. Monday and Thursday 6:00 to 8:00 pm. or by appointment..

Message from the Highway Superintendent

The last time that you heard from me, winter was loosing its grip on Steuben and spring and summer work was under way.  As I write this we are finishing screening sand for the up and coming winter.  Some small repair has to be made to our sand building and then we will be ready to put up sand and salt for the winter.  This summer has been busy and very productive.  We have paved Bethel Road, oil and stoned Dole, Jones, and Smith Roads.  Because of all the rain this year the Oil Companies are behind but I hope to be able to finish the last two roads Williams and Llewellyn the first week in September.  Our 2002 International truck caught on fire during the night and was a total loss.  The new truck now has the dump box and plow equipment and is ready for winter.  This fall we will be out to take care of brush and limbs that could cause problems this winter and we still have some ditching to do.  Thank you.

Thank All the residences of the town for their assistance in returning the town wide planning board survey and that it will help us in planning the future direction of the town.  Projects that we, the planning board, are working on are: Reviewing and updating the status of all the town roads, updating the Comprehensive Plan (tells how the town has grown and what the current characteristics of the town are, it was last done in the late 70's ) .  The planning board is continually taking training to keep up with the state and local regulations.  Any person interested in helping with input is very welcome to attend planning board meetings at the Steuben Town Hall, 2nd Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm.  Thank you, Ben Simons, planning board
